Description

Relief printing is the gateway medium into the two-dimensional art form of printmaking. This two-hour workshop will teach the fundamentals of creating a relief block using artist linoleum and making a print of the block on paper. Topics covered will be printmaking terms, materials, tools, safety, basic cutting, inking, printing, and cleanup. The project will be to practice mark-making on linoleum, using those marking skills to cut a picture into the block, and then making a print from the block.

Materials and Safety Notes

All of the materials, ink, and cleanup solutions are non-toxic and do not require the general use of protective gloves or face masks. The ink used in this course is water-based and easy to clean, but once it is dry the pigments can stain fabrics. Wear clothing that can get dirty. If your skin is very sensitive, thin gloves that permit unhampered use of fingers are fine. The use of hand creams and moisturizers are also safe, as there are no chemicals being used that can react with them.
