This reduction woodcut print depicts a zebra swallowtail butterfly, a common butterfly in the eastern USA. This species (Eurytides marcellus) is quite different from the other swallowtail butterflies in the genus Papilio. The natural host plants for the zebra swallowtail caterpillars are pawpaw trees. Where there are many pawpaw trees, there will be many zebra swallowtail butterflies, which is one reason there are many more of these insects in large tracts forest of easter forest. Cleared farmland areas have fewer of these butterflies. Another interesting fact is that the larvae are cannibalistic, so the female zebra swallowtail lays her eggs singly on the leaves or trunks of a suitable pawpaw tree.
